Southwark Lancers 2011 - Rugby Union London

The Southwark Rugby Club is relatively new, in fact when I moved to London 5 years ago it didn't exist. It was founded by Chris Callaway who has done an amazing job building it up, now putting out 3 strong teams every week. Since the club was formed they have won the league for 3 consecutive years in a row to get to its current position in London and South East Division Kent 2.

Being with my previous club Belsize Park RFC for just over 4 years I wasn't looking to leave. However I heard about Southwark via a local neighbor and was persuaded to attend training one night. As its just around the corner from where I live, it was very handy. The following week I found myself playing in the first team and settled in really well. Southwark RFC has a good bunch of lads, great coach and being one of the most centrally located clubs in London is great for me.

Saturday 9th April 2001: The game filmed above was against Guys and St Thomas RFC who were the champions of the league this season. They will be going up to Kent 1 next year. Our aim next year to to do the same and with the strength, playing ability and new players gained this year we are firm favorites to achieve this goal.

This year we already proved our ability to beat two Kent 1 sides to play in the Kent Vase final against Sheppey RFC. It was an amazing achievement to a fantastic year of rugby.

New players are always welcome to join. We train every Wednesday at 7pm, our ground is located near the Tesco's on Old Kent Road, next to Burgess Park (click here for map). The season starts again in September, but pre -season fitness and training will get going in August. If you fancy playing get in contact with us, all the details are on the web site:

Alternatively if you like playing rugby in the summer then they run a fast paced 7's side, or better still try some Super League! I play for Greenwich Admirals RLFC the champions of London and South East and will be promoted to the Premier League next season. The rugby league season for this starts in May through till August, but you'll need to be very fit for this as its a much faster paced game. Get fit and love it...
